Sustainability is now at the top of most companies’ priority lists. And business travel is a key area where improvements can be made. So, how can you get valuable data and insights to set the right targets for your company? And how do you empower travellers to make more sustainable choices?

As of October 2023, American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) is adding a new set of sustainability-focused product tools and features to the Amex GBT Egencia (Egencia™) solution.

All about data – updated carbon emissions calculations

The Egencia solution currently offers the established carbon emission calculation, introduced by BEIS (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy), formerly known as DEFRA (Department for Environment Food, and Rural Affairs). In addition to BEIS, we’ll now offer a calculation methodology from IATA (International Air Transport Association). This IATA calculation is made specifically for flight travel and considers more variables than other methodologies, incorporating aircraft efficiency, destination, cabin class and ‘load’ factors (‘load’ is the percentage of available seating capacity that has been filled with passengers). Together, these factors result in a more precise and accurate calculation of carbon emissions.

Tracking and reporting on carbon emissions will be available in Egencia's Analytics Studio and data hub, where you’ll get a dedicated carbon emission dashboard for easy data visualisation and the ability to generate ready-made or customised reports. Travel managers using the IATA calculation methodology will be able to report on both carbon methodologies if they wish to assess their carbon emissions for continuity and comparison purposes.

Compare flights – easily

New green badges will show a flight's carbon efficiency compared to other flights on that route. This can make it much easier for travellers make more sustainable choices with their carbon footprint in mind. A new flight sorting feature can also make it quicker to find the most carbon-efficient flight possible for that trip.

Carbon compensation

A company might want to compensate for their carbon emissions by investing in climate action beyond their value chains.

Our carbon offset calculator lets you display your compensation cost to your travellers in real time as they book their flight. It will help you calculate how much the company will ultimately invest in compensation projects. You simply need to set the price per CO2 that you plan to invest.

Check out our partner CHOOOSE, a climate technology company, which offers carbon compensation opportunities in a variety of impactful and verified projects around the world.
